When’s the Best Time to Book Family Photos?

This is probably the #1 question I get asked as a photographer, and the truth is… anytime can be the right time!

We’re lucky to live in beautiful Southern California where the weather is pretty amazing year-round (give or take a few degrees). That means you really can’t go wrong. Fall is hands-down the busiest season because so many families want updated photos for their Christmas cards, but that’s definitely not the only option.

Some families love booking in the summer when things feel a little less hectic. Others prefer spring to take advantage of cooler days, fresh greenery, or even wildflowers. And honestly? Each season has its own charm, and I love capturing them all.

Here’s a little breakdown to help you decide what might feel right for your family:

Fall Sessions

Fall has my heart. The weather cools down, the light gets softer, and the colors just feel cozy and festive. There’s something about the golden tones of the leaves and that crisp air that makes photos feel extra warm and connected. Plus, it’s perfect timing if you want a fresh photo for your holiday card—you’ll have that gorgeous, updated family picture to share just as the season of togetherness begins.

One perk of fall that many families love is the earlier sunsets. For little ones, that means we can capture dreamy golden light and still get everyone home in time for dinner or bedtime routines. No cranky kids, no overtired meltdowns—just relaxed smiles and genuine moments.

It’s also a season that naturally feels nostalgic. The lead-up to the holidays has this built-in sense of family traditions, gathering, and slowing down, which always comes through in the photos. Because fall is by far the most popular time of year, spots tend to book up quickly. If you’re thinking about a fall session, it’s always smart to reach out early so you can secure your ideal date and location without the stress of last-minute scheduling.

Spring & Summer Sessions

These seasons don’t get nearly enough love, but they are truly stunning. Spring brings a sense of renewal with lush greenery, colorful wildflowers popping up in unexpected places, and that perfect “sunny and 75” weather Southern California is known for. The days are longer, which gives us more flexibility to work around busy family schedules and still catch that dreamy golden light. It’s also a wonderful time if you love softer, more natural backdrops with lots of texture and color.

Summer, on the other hand, is all about vibrancy and energy. Think golden beaches, kids running barefoot in the sand, or relaxed sessions at your favorite park. The trees are full and green, and the sunsets over the water can be absolutely magical this time of year. And if the heat feels like too much, we always have the option to head into the studio where we can create bright, clean, and timeless images with the bonus of AC comfort.

What I love most about families choosing spring or summer is the mood. Without the pressure of holiday cards or end-of-year busyness, these sessions feel more relaxed and playful. Parents aren’t as rushed, kids are often out of school or in an easier routine, and the whole experience becomes less about checking something off a list and more about just enjoying time together. That energy always shines through in the photos. It’s light, carefree, and authentically your family.

What About Time of Day?

“Golden hour” (that dreamy light right before sunset) is a photographer’s best friend, and I’ll usually recommend it. But here’s the real secret: the best time for photos is when your kids are happiest.

If evenings are meltdown central, let’s plan earlier. If mornings are your family’s sweet spot, we’ll go with that. The goal isn’t just beautiful light, it’s making sure everyone feels good so your photos reflect real smiles and genuine moments.

Final Tip

No matter what season or time you’re leaning toward, reach out early. Fall, especially, books up fast (some families grab their spots as early as August!). I share openings on social media as soon as they’re available, and right now I still have a few sessions left in Long Beach and Orange County for 2025.

At the end of the day, the best time to book photos is the time that feels right for your family. Because the most important part? You’ll never regret making the time to capture these memories.
